Is it harder to control a chichild fish tank than a regular fish tank.?

Ok ive been a fish owner for years but i have never owned chichild fish. I want to know if its harder to take care of than just a regular fish tankIs it harder to control a chichild fish tank than a regular fish tank.?
There are alot of varients to cichlid keeping. I've been breeding my Africans for a year now and I still ask and compare notes with other keepers. You'll want to keep this in mind though. The word cichlid encompasses 1000's of species of fish from all over the world. Typically when talking about cichlids I break them down into SA's (South Americans) or Africans.

There's been an increasing number of posts about how tank raised fish can tolerate different parameters which is true, but I still don't advise this. I bring this up as one of the bigger differences between SA's and Africans is water chemistry needs. Though not each one from each group needs the same type of water, I cannot see any good reason to not simulate or generate waters as close to where they originate from. It takes 1000's of generations for genetic differences to occur and develope so I doubt very much tank raised fish have become genetically different from where the species itself comes from.

A second general difference between Africans and SA's is usually temperment. I say usually as that doesn't mean SA's are weak. By far a Green Terror or Jack Dempsey can hold it's own with most any other fish. Just as a generality though, Africans are usually more aggressive, but I also happen to find the colors and looks of Africans more pleasing.

A good place to start to narrow down what you might be interested in and you might even find the best answer here too, is cichlid-forum.com. You can get profile information as well as pictures of species you might be interested in. If that doesn't help you out, at least look over ones that interest you so I can better help you.Is it harder to control a chichild fish tank than a regular fish tank.?
Well, it really depends on what you mean by ';regular.'; If regular means tetras, barbs, and guppies, then yes.

If regular means gouramis, sharks (not really sharks), and other larger fish, then it could be moderately more or less the same.

Cichlids are a very diverse group of fish. They are the prolific breeders in the egglaying category, and often tend to their young enough so that we don't need to interfere for a while. Keep in mind angels and discus are also cichlids.

Cichlids generally need a larger tank (like 40 and up) if you're keeping cichlids from the lakes of Africa (because they need around 5 or 6 of themselves to establish a pecking order). If you're keeping discus, shoot for the largest tank possible. Angels can be kept in smaller tanks (20) but they usually at least like to have themselves a 30 for extra comfort.

The cichlids from the lakes of Africa are very different in terms of tank decor, some like snail shells, others (most) like rocky caves to establish territories. They need a ratio of about 1 male to 3 females so that the females aren't destroyed in flirtations, and that the males aren't torn apart fighting for other females.

The main thing about them is that they are all considerably large, and need frequent water changes to thrive. Other than that, they're a cinch.
yes. First, they are aggressive. So it is hard to find tank mates for cichlids. Also, the are aggressive among themselves if there is not a good ratio of male to female, and if they do not have their own space.

Second, they get big. So the tank needs to be able to handle the size of cichlids.

Third, each type of cichlid has a different personality and requirements for tank setup. Some require shade, others require snail shells to hide in, etc, etc.

Overall, they are harder to keep then the average tropical setup.
yes it is i am a beginer but i know. it depends on alot of stuff if u get a fish dont get a oscar the only reason is cuz if ur gettting a oscar then u need to get it small and get another fish with it when it is little like i did but they are so intresting but right now i am fighting through a disease in my tank right now that damn ich got my fish and it ios hard to cure it but yeah cichlid tanks need more filtration i hav two 50+ filters for my 55 gallon but they are fun i hand feed my oscar he is so cool but good luck on ur choice
Well chicilds need different food, usually a mixture of fish sticks. They can only live with other Chilcilds because they are very agressive. That is the only difference. Hope you enjoy the brightly coloured chilcilds! x
Cichlid can be aggressive and many species of them require a large tank, over 50 gallons. Other than being for fishkeepers that are a little more advanced, they should be fairly easy to keep.
