Is it possible to disable the control button on a Dell Laptop?

I've been having a few issues with my laptop, and my warranty has expired, so I can't send it back for repairs or maintenance. Oftentimes my computer begins to act like I have the control button pressed, and it will not allow me to type at all.

For example, I type ';That's not true';. Instead the computer will believe I've pressed ctrl_T, ctrl_h, so on and so forth, etc...

Is there any possible way for me to disable the ctrl button? As in, make is unusable so if the computer believes I have it pressed it will have no effect on my typing? Is it possible to disable the control button on a Dell Laptop?
Not sure if you can disable the cntrl key....But, if I was you, I would first go to Dell's website under ';support'; and look for your model. Then check to see if there are any updates that are available - sounds more like your missing a update for the keyboard.

One cheap way to find out what is wrong is plug in a standard desktop keyboard to the laptop. Try typing something to see if the cntl button still sticks as you mentioned it does using the laptop keyboard. If you can type fine with an external keyboard attached (no cntrl button issues) - then try just popping off the cntrl key on your laptop keyboard - could be something under the key is making it stickyIs it possible to disable the control button on a Dell Laptop?
check out sticky keys by pressing the shift key 5 times fast
You can get a USB keyboard and plug it into a USB port on the laptop, that will get you the ability to continue to use the laptop while you ask around for someone to help you with the failing keyboard.

Here are three possible reasons for the key to have failed.

One is that the conductive circuits under the key are no good anymore.

Two is that moisture from soda water got into the keyboard under that key (you're not drinking Coke or Pepsi, are you?). Cokes and Pepsi and the like contain phosphoric acid and citric acid, which will attack and corrode metal parts. Which ruins the computer.

Three is that a small insect got under the key in the computer and got squashed when you began typing.

Yes, a small insect. I've found dead small spiders in webs in desktop computers before; they get into the computer while the business is closed for a weekend, and when the business opens up again a couple of days later and the computer is turned on and gets warm inside, the spider dies from dessication.

And yesterday I saw a gnat land on my monitor. Tiny little insect !
Well this sounds to be a real funny and frustrating stuff.

Lets see if this works or not. I am pretty sure that you Laptop must be at least an year old to run out of the warranty.

Alright, Let me answer your question first and then we can try some basic Hardware troubleshooting steps. the answer is 'NO' you cannot disable the ctrl, that's the control button.

(Since its a Dell laptop) Now, if you are comfortable to use a philips screw driver on the laptop, get one and uncover the hinge. We are going to reseat the keyboard. The hinge cover is the one that has the Power button on it. Lift it up from the left side and then gradually from the center and the the right part to get it out completely. Figure out the screws that are holding the keyboard in its place and unscrew them. You don't want to loose those screws, so make sure you keep them at some safe place. Lift the keyboard up from one end. You will see that the keyboard is connected to the laptop with a strip of wire. You have to remove the wire from the laptop and not from the keyboard. Make sure you try and remove the wire from the laptop and not the keyboard. Once the keyboard is out keep it aside and clean the surface the you can clean on the laptop as well as on the keyboard. Now reaseat the keyboard in the reverse step as we removed it. I f that does not work, go to the dell website support.us.dell.com-goto-drivers and downloads-enter the service tag of you laptop-Install the driver mentioned for keyboard-It might be listed under input devices.

If this does not solve the problem, may be you laptop need a replacement keyboard. Just call Dell Technical Support on (US) 1800-624-9896.

Nikhil
