We have a broken control arm on the front tire on a 2001 lexus gs300, they want to charge 420$ just for labor. I think this type of thing shouldnt take more than an hour or 2. Is it really take 420$ worth of time for a mechanic to change a single control arm? I think they are just bsing me.How much time does it take to change a control arm?
I am assuming you are referring to the lower control arm. The $420.00 sounds very reasonable to me on that car. I would not complain if that price did not include the alignment either. This is a very labor intensive job and I think they have given you a very nice price, especially if the alignment was included. the labor time for the lower control arm is 6.6 hours. the upper is 1.4... if you take a national average labor price of $95 an hour, the lower would be $627, and the upper would be $133. that is just labor; part and taxes not included.
find out which control arm, but that is the law for those times. if they have any other time for ONLY that part, then you need to find another shop.
it just depends how hard it comes off. some of those bushings freeze up plus they need to compress the spring. it can be a bear sometimes but i would,nt think it would cost $420 dollars. if they had,nt started yet then take it someplace else.
find out what their hourly rate is/ask to see mechanics time on the repair/these companys usually use chilton book. find oout how much the part is and if it includes 4 wheel alignment and then you can talk intelligently
