Is the only way to control the Nintendo DS with the touch screen or is it like the GBA controls?

Is the only way to control a character on the DS with the touch screen or is it just like the game boy advance controls? If its like the GBA controls then whats the touch screen for? The Nintendo DS has a d-pad and buttons, so it can be played like a GBA. It also plays GBA games. I have a DS, and it's a great system. I would recommend it.Is the only way to control the Nintendo DS with the touch screen or is it like the GBA controls?
i would recomend a ds if u just want plain fun but if u want fun with sum addons like web browser get a psp, cuz the only way to getting the ds to run web browser is to get homebrew stuff. . .
