What does it mean to be in control of your emotions?

I've lived for too long under the precedence that letting your emotions run you is freedom, its what makes you human and is what makes life romantic. The more I've tried to improve myself and read and learned about psychology is that this philosophy is probably not true. Is there more freedom in being in control of your emotions than it is letting your emotions run you? Does it not turn you into a robotic person? What does it mean to be in control of your emotions?
First of all understand that emotions are there for us and serves us well. Emotions make our life more interesting and colorful. You don鈥檛 want to be without any emotion. That is not the goal here.

What we want is to acknowledge that emotions have a very important place in our lives. However just like anything else, too much of one thing makes it unhealthy.

Sometimes it is good to let emotions take control over us and guide our actions and decisions. Other times, it is better that we are the ones controlling emotions.

When dealing with emotions, don鈥檛 ignore it, avoid it, dismiss it, and especially don't suppress the emotions. Instead, we acknowledge it鈥檚 existence, and take note of what it is trying to tell us (the message), and move along by responding to the message in an objective manner.

So here it is in a nutshell, a step by step process of controlling emotions in any situation perhaps it will help.

1. When something happens and brings a surge of unwanted emotion to you, immediately do something bizarre and break your state. Get the first attack. Be an unrelated observer of the scene and keep yourself in that disassociated state.

2. Watch what is happening from a 3rd party observer perspective and get curious about what is going on. What happened? What are you feeling?

3. Continue to probe further while still being disassociated and observing from afar. Why is she feeling that? What does she want instead?

4. Finally objectively come up with a response or solution to what happened.

Goodluck! What does it mean to be in control of your emotions?
To be in control of your emotions is freedom, to let them run you is not freedom.

It's best to respond to something after you have thought about it first, then you don't make rash decisions or judgements. Most people don't do this, it takes a lot of practise.

You don't become a robotic person because of this. As long as you acknowledge your emotions whatever they may be and choose to respond only if you want to.
Emotions are good for you.

But if we allow our emotions to make all the choices in our life then we are setting our selves up for disaster.

Self-Control means Everything has to have a balance.

Think before you act. But also realize that if you think Too much then you are less likely to act.

Its all about your own self awareness. You need to know what all the ticks and tricks are that get you going.

Then learn to balance them.

Dont be so dramatic, but dont act like you have no feelings.

Be confident.
