I have a propane fireplace, it has a control low to high and a blower?

Coming out of the control low to high button is this copper wire that is long with a much thicker copper end., and this is coming out of the fireplace screen, I was told when we bought this house to leave it coming out of the fireplace screen as that senses the temperature and controls the heat., someone came to my house and said oh no you put that back inside the fireplace where the controls are., I am so confused what is this thing and what is it for? I have a propane fireplace, it has a control low to high and a blower?
it goes over where the flame is its called a thermocouple

heat converts to electricity Thur it allows the gas valve to open

shuts it off when the flame goes out, I have a propane fireplace, it has a control low to high and a blower?
It is not the thermocouple! The thermocouple does look like what you have described, but it is on a clip that is within the pilot light. What you have is a temperature sensor and it can be on the floor of the fireplace if you don't like the way it looks, or you can leave it outside the fireplace. The only difference will be that if it is in the fireplace you will need to keep the control button higher in order to keep the room warmer as the hot air in the fireplace will shut down sooner. It is normally placed in front of the intake air of the blower. Hope this makes sense.
