Poison ivy and poison oak will persist for the same length of time or without medication. If secondary bacterial infection occurs, healing will be delayed; hence, scratching is not helpful. Poison ivy is not contagious. It can't be spread once the oil has been either absorbed by the skin or removed. If the lesions are too extensive to be easily treated, if home treatment is ineffective, or if the itching is so severe that it can't be tolerated, a call to the doctor may be necessary. The itching may be treated with either an antihistamine ( Benadryl or Vistaril, for example) or acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. The antihistamines may cause drowsiness and interfere with sleep. The resulting rash begins after a delay of 12 to 48 hours and persist for about two weeks. And good luck. What is the best way to control poison oak? And how long does it last?
