Is it normal to not start birth control until the 6-week checkup after birth?

I thought I'd start it sooner so that it would be effective by the 6-week mark, but my doctor said we'd discuss it at 6 weeks.

What's your experience with this? Thanks! Is it normal to not start birth control until the 6-week checkup after birth?
My OBGYN saw me at two weeks post pardum, and gave me a prescription for birth control then; although he told me to wait until I hit four weeks post pardum to start on the pill. When he saw me at six weeks post pardum he asked me if I had started. Is it normal to not start birth control until the 6-week checkup after birth?
Yes that is normal. You are supposed to wait until after your 6 week postpartum check up to have sex so the Dr. can make sure everything is back in order. If it is, then they will give you the green light to have sex and the other things they may have restricted you from doing. If you are not pregnant (it happens) then they will start you on the the birth control.

I read your added details:

I think they just like to make sure you are completely back to ';normal'; before they tell you that you can have sex. If they started women on BC earlier, then some women would start having sex before that 6 week mark and may not be completely healed yet. You will just have to use additional birth control like spermicides or condoms during that month waiting period.
Yes its normal. You are not supposed to have any sexual intercourse for 6 weeks after a baby is born because it is so easy to get pregnant and your organs are still healing. Also after 6 weeks your uterus and cervix are back to normal, and this when its okay to begin birth control, provided you are not pregnant.
Yes. Most doctors won't even discuss birth control with you until your 6 week checkup. I know, it's kinda crappy. I'm going to go on the pill too after my checkup. I guess we'll have to use condoms or something until the pill becomes effective.
well with my first child .. i was to start birth control at 6 week visit but couldn't as i found out that i was possibly pregnant...

doc was right the eldest two 10 months apart...

just if you don't want another pregnancy try to hold out until you get on some sort of birth control..

good luck ..

enjoy motherhood..

Yes, since your body is still healing it is best to wait until the doctor has checked you out %26amp; gave you the okay to start birth control pills.
